back in Kampala

First, thanks for all the emails I have received from everyone, glad to know
that I'm providing a bit of entertainment.

Well, I know I said before that you have to visit Ethiopia, but before you
go there, come and get stuck in Uganda! In the past it wasn't called 'the
Pearl of Africa' for nothing.

The last 3 weeks have flown by!
After rafting the White Nile, which I rate better than the Zambezi, I headed
into Kampala for the 11th Annual Royal Ascot day goat races. Basically the
goat races are just an excuse for all the expats in Uganda to get stupidly
drunk in a very impressive surrounding and in a very decadent way.
The drinking started at about 11 am and lasted through the night. Very
good!!

After a few days to recover, I headed out west, along with a 4 wheel drive
full of aussies, towards Bwindi National Park, home to some of the last
remaining mountain gorillas.
The next four days saw us enjoying Uganda's uncrowded wildlife parks and
living like kings!
A highlight was a night at Ishasha game camp in Queen Elizabeth NP, we were
camping on the banks of the river which borders Uganda and the DRC,
surrounded by hundreds of hippos during the night, we were also visited by
hyena and were treated to the occasional cough of a nearby lion. Quite
nerve racking when trying to take a bush shower or requiring a midnight
toilet run!!

I arrived back into Kampala this afternoon and will hopefully do a fishing
charter on Lake Victoria tomorrow, in search of a Nile Perch.

As I now only have less than a month to go to get to PE and my Mom's
wedding, Friday will be spent servicing the bike and getting rid of any
excess luggage, the next month will done with no camping or cooking gear and
with the minimum of clothing.( smelly!!)

The first 1800km will all be offroad and through Western Tanzania, the road
through there has been described to me by another biker as 'the best and
worst that east africa can throw at you all in one' and should be my last
challenge before belting it home on asphalt roads.

Cheers for now.
